My First Book of Japanese Words by Michelle Haney Brown, Illustrated by Aya Padron, is an ABC rhyming book of Japanese Language and Culture. The book starts with a Japanese language pronunciation guide, then, introduces us to the sights, sounds and culture of Japan, drawing the reader in through its quiet rhymes and engaging illustrations.
Throughout the pages, we see the drawings of things familiar to us, but unfamiliar to our tongues, like inu (a dog), chocho (a butterfly). Some pages describe things not as familiar in sight or sound, and are a window into another world: hashi (chopsticks), tanuki (a racoon dog -really?!), an onigiri (a Japanese rice ball - yum!),
Even better are the subtle insights into their culture, like on the K page for kutsu (outdoor shoes), a side note informs us that the Japanese people take off their outdoor shoes before they into the house. So they distinguish between indoor and outdoor shoes! These cultural notes are my favorite part of the book.
Listen to the spoken Japanese words in this book and practice saying them, as there is an audio file on the Tuttle website - love that! Tuttle Publishing has a collection of My First Book Word books including Chinese and Korean. After reading My First Book of Japanese words, I would collect them all!
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
